In my final year of high school I was given a spot on the student council as “tech person”. Although typically this role just meant the grunt work of setting up AV equipment, I tried to use my skills as a web developer to make student events more fun and engaging.
High schools are not high schools without rivalries, and our school was no exception. Our rivalry was with Charlottetown Rural Senior High School. The student councils for our respective schools teamed up to create a series of competitive events between our student populations, the first of which was a nerf battle taking place in our gymnasium.
Of course, with tensions flying so high we needed referees. My contribution was a website to be projected on the side of the school wall. Referees used it to keep track of which players were still in the game, points awarded, etc. As with many of my high school projects, it was built in PHP with a MySQL database.
